Lerning Smile

When I was in my class kids belly dance class yesterday, I told the kids a new belly dance teacher is going to take over their class. One of the kid answered very loudest ‘ I don’t want’. I was shocked how she react. Others asked why, where you want to go and bla….bla….bla…. honestly I was touching and also want to know why….so I continue to ask, she answered me “last time you asked me to smile when dance, now I already learned how to smile, I don’t want to go other teacher class” I have no words to say what I felt at that moment and said “I love you” not just with words, but with deeds and actions. Anyway....I am a bit hesitant to blog about this in some detail.

She had learn to smile,
enjoy and learn to be comfortable with it. She had finally reached a point where she could be comfortable smiling. I recalled it took me so long to teach the kids how to smile and enjoy in dancing. I remember one of them told me she don’t know how to smile, one of them told me she feel shy to show her uneven teeth. One of the kid smiled when she wore elegant costume on the stage without me telling her to do that!. More and more and they enjoy the dance and they smile!

When we learn a new dance or a new amalgamation, It's human nature we focus on the steps and the figures. But if we want to feel good and look good, we need to go beyond technical accuracy and incorporate into our dancing with body language and communication. If without the language in dance, the dance is just steps and exercise! Dance has power to communicate, dance contains emotion, if we have something more than exercise, we have art.

I usually not too demanding if the kids don’t ‘smile perfectly’. Yesterday class we did  more  challenge - a big smile, a genuine smile, showing teeth and everything. I told them they can have a goofy smile, some of them just shown me their tooth that it looked a bit weird,.. Hahaha! And throughout the entire day, we all had to Smile and Dance.

Zombie...

My first morning routine in office is include some dose of caffeine to start the day – a cup of Coffee or Nescafe! If without coffee in the morning, I end up becoming a zombie who just wakes up and works without creativity or happiness. I am find with such levels of caffeine swimming around in my blood and definitely notice a higher level of productivity along with my day. Cheers for ‘Kopi O’!

I heard gossip! And someone is making gossip! Sigh…….this will not be a happy post! In life, I encountered a lot of up and downs. But it is nevertheless, through all these problems and obstacles that I learn to stand up on my feet times to times again despite the falls I had, that made me what I am today.

I love lots and lots of things about belly dance…and this week I’ve been able to do loads of it… couldn’t be more impressed… it’s due to the ability of too ‘expert people’ in their ideas, challenges and bad comments they’re given! As a belly dance teacher, I'm pretty proud of what I've accomplished, I've had some moments of great teaching in my dance studio. Thank you to all my students/ friends who fuel my soul and guide me in this amazing belly dance journey!

I came to a conclusion that I cant please everyone. I do the best and I have an equal responsibility to everybody… I wish I had a magic that allowed me to figure this one out, but it's something I've really given a lot of thought to.... I couldn't believe the situation and the true disrespect that was actually shown. Uhh sorry, whatever though, whatever. I cant give my parenting advice and I’m only a belly dance teacher, a teacher that make everyone enjoy, learn, courage and be more openness of the performances, your desire to create something that is the best that it can be in that moment…

What I can do is force myself to read a few pages of a book or even keep my eyes open. I still want to get better because I still want to teach. I can only imagine what new challenges will face me on today!

When there is belly dance competition, I need brain competition to create choreography. The choreography is already stored in my body, putting it on the page is just mental repetition. Sigh…a little ‘brain sucking’ if student depend heavily on me when performing the movement.

The 2nd Malaysia Open Dance Fest 2010 is challenging as the contester need to dance to the live music in advance category. In Malaysia, live music is not always available, and we, belly dancers usually choreograph our belly dance to recorded music. The organiser will be giving drum demonstrations lesson in August. Hey, what a good opportunity to learn to the live ‘dum’ and ‘tek’! Don’t miss it! I love good challenge! I am waiting for demonstrations lesson……not only for belly dance, but will also improve my leading and dancing skills.
